Some wild and windy weather presented itself to the runners who stepped up to compete at the ANSW Short Course Championships at Dapto. Held at a fantastic, man made cross country venue, a team of Athletics East runners competed over the open 7.5km distance and 3 and 4km in the junior ranks.
It was great to see a contingent of junior athletes out racing starting in the under 13 females up to the under 16 males. All junior athletes performed admirably in deep fields with Ruby Madden continuing her stellar track form over the cross country races finishing in 11th place and in incredible time of 15.55. Sub 4 minute kilometres for the 4km distance for a 14 year old!
The men were the first of our open athletes to race. Two laps over the undulating course proved challenging with 40km ph head winds greeting runners for long stretches of the course. Godwin Mugarula was the best placed AE athlete finishing 16th (25:35) in what was a very deep male field. Chamkaur Dhaliwal continues to make his steady comeback finishing 25th (27:09) and Philip Balnave took 1st place (28:56) in his age group.
The open women’s race followed closely after the men’s race with 7 ladies taking to the start line. Fresh from her half marathon, Lisa Biffin finished just outside the top 10 in 11th place (31:07) to lead the ladies home with a great display of team running from Cindy Paisio (32.46), Rona MacNiven (32.57) & Aisling Swaine (33.03) who finished within seconds of each other. The ladies team also took silver in the teams competition.
